I’m Sandra Kirkeby. My family and I run Grass Munchers, the most eco-friendly lawn care service provider in Edmonton. We’re a lawn care and landscaping business that takes full advantage of the best features of technology while remembering that people still come first.
I used to work for one of those big companies where you’re basically a number, and you’re supposed to care more about the bottom line than your customers or your staff. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I realized it was a waste of time. I could do better. And after being stuck inside for years, I wanted to get outside. So in 2018, I started SOS Landscaping with my family.
Our landscaping venture was a success! We started to explore how we could expand our services, and I found out about a company down in California that was doing automated lawn care service—robot lawn mowers. These mowers were much more eco-friendly than gas mowers, because they were battery-operated, and they did just as good a job
as the gas guzzlers. “That’s exciting!” I thought. “We could do that!”
So we started Grass Munchers, and in addition to the landscaping services we still offer, we’re now introducing Edmonton to fully automated lawn care with our Husqvarna Automowers.
These mowers are a new idea in Canada. We’re the only company in western Canada that offers lawn care services with them. But Husqvarna actually created the first version of these mowers almost 25 years ago and has perfected them into extremely reliable, precise machines. They do amazing work on lawns.
We still have the human touch
We’ve embraced some exciting, eco-friendly technology to provide our lawn care services, but at Grass Munchers, the two most important things will always be our customers and our staff.
For example, we hire people who struggle to be employed because of issues like mental health challenges, disabilities and homelessness. This is important to me because for 15 years I worked with people who have brain injuries, and I’ve had my own disabilities too. I was in a car accident in 2001 and was in a wheelchair for quite awhile. I had chronic pain and memory issues, and I was not supposed to be able to walk again, though thankfully I did recover my ability to walk.
Now that I run my own company and can make my own decisions about how to run it, I want to help people with employment challenges. I want them to be able to provide for themselves and their families, to be more independent. I believe that’s more important than having a large bottom line and being able to take a vacation to the Bahamas every three months.
How can we help you?
We would love to hear from you and explore how the team at Grass Munchers, both human and robot, could help you with your lawn care and landscaping needs. Please get in touch!
